Falcons v Rhinos
Unlike many observers, UCU Canons coach Nick Natuhereza believes his team are contending for the 2015 National Basketball League (NBL) championship.
“We have been in the league for eight years so we surely can’t have any other objective than to win the title,” Natuhereza told the New Vision on Sunday.
While Natuhereza’s claim may be debatable, few are reluctant to question the title credentials of UCU’s opponents in today’s Airtel NBL four-game schedule.
The Canons travel to Kansanga to face inter-university rivals KIU Titans, who have upgraded their status from mid-table giants to genuine title contenders this season with the additions of Henry Malinga, Norman Blick and Geoffrey Soro.
KIU’s painful overtime loss to the City Oilers is their only defeat this season and Hamza Nyambogo’s men will be favourites to get another win tonight and again in next week’s meeting with the StarTimes Falcons.
Of course, Natuhereza’s men will not be short of motivation, knowing that defeating the Titans on their home court would be a serious statement of intent on their part.
Elsewhere, the KIU Rangers and UCU Lady Canons will open proceedings at KIU, with the hosts looking to score some measure of revenge against a side that has overwhelmingly dominated their match-ups.
The Canons simply get it done against the Rangers but it will be interesting to see if Nimrod Kaboha’s side can make the most of home advantage.
